Significant Google Search Algorithm ‘Helpful Content Update’ Incoming

On August 18th, Search Engine Land reported that “Google is about to launch a new and large search algorithm update” and it might be one of the most impactful “in the last decade”.

This update is gunning for those pieces of content that are written for search engines instead of for people.

Honestly, despite the uncertainty that these updates always bring, I’m excited for this one.

Try googling “Filipino chicken adobo” or “when is Mayans season 5 coming out” and you’ll see what I mean.

This chicken adobo recipe (I hate that I’m backlinking to them, but don’t worry, it’s set to nofollow), and frankly a ton of recipes, are overly optimized to the point where you get a textbook explaining what the dish is instead of the list of 5 ingredients you need.

No wonder people are leaving Google Search for TikTok 🙂

Here are some more details:

  • It’s targeting sites that write for search engines rather than people.
  • This is site-wide, not just page-specific. In other words, Google is going to identify sites that exhibit this behavior and it will impact the entire site’s rankings.
  • This will roll out starting next week and take a few weeks to finish.

What do I do?

If you aren’t already, START WRITING FOR HUMANS! You’re not going to cheat Google’s system. Ultimately, if you provide your audience with valuable, helpful content, you should be fine.

Beyond that, be sure to monitor organic search traffic and rankings in the coming weeks.

For those interested, Google Search Central has a page dedicated to ALL of the ranking algorithm updates since 2020, including product review updates, on their site.
